چکیده

Debugging control software for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) can be risky out of the simulator, especially with professional drones that might harm people around or result in a high bill after a crash. We have designed a framework that enables a software application to communicate with multiple MAVs from a single unified interface. In this way, visual controllers can be first tested on a low-cost harmless MAV and, after safety is guaranteed, they can be moved to the production MAV at no additional cost. The framework is based on a distributed architecture over a network. This allows multiple configurations, like drone swarms or parallel processing of drones' video streams. Live tests have been performed and the results show comparatively low additional communication delays, while adding new functionalities and flexibility. This implementation is open-source and can be downloaded from github.com/uavster/mavwork

Rapid Prototyping Framework for Visual Control of Autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicles

Rapid prototyping environments can speed up the research of visual control algorithms. We have designed and implemented a software framework for fast prototyping of visual control algorithms for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV). We have applied a combination of a proxy-based network communication architecture and a custom Application Programming Interface. This allows multiple experimental configura...

Digital Autoland Control Laws Using Direct Digital Design and Quantitative Feedback Theory

Manually landing an unmanned aerial vehicle presents unique challenges since unmanned vehicle pilots require extensive training to become proficient in the landing task. Operators must therefore choose between a pilot controlling the vehicle from a ground station, or procurement of an automatic landing system. Although several autoland controllers exist for small or micro unmanned vehicles and ...

Biologically Inspired Micro-Flight Research

Natural fliers demonstrate a diverse array of flight capabilities, many of which are poorly understood. NASA has established a research project to explore and exploit flight technologies inspired by biological systems. One part of this project focuses on dynamic modeling and control of micro aerial vehicles that incorporate flexible wing structures inspired by natural fliers such as insects, hu...

Black Box Optimization of PID controllers for Micro Aerial Vehicles

When operating flying robots we repeatedly face the necessity of tuning controllers for particular electronic and physical configurations. In the spirit of embodied robotic learning we want to tune the controllers during the system’s closed-loop operation. We present an experiment applying a black box Bayesian optimization technique to the problem of tuning a hierarchical vertical position PID ...

A Framework for the Scalable Control of Swarms of Unmanned Ground Vehicles with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

We address the problem of deploying groups of tens or hundreds of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in urban environments where one or more unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used to coordinate the groups. We envision a paradigm in which a UAV with aerial cameras can be used to monitor and command a swarm of UGVs, and a hierarchy allowing a central planner to plan the splitting and merging of...
